Communications satellite Telstar 1 was launched atop a Thor-Delta rocket on July 10, 1962. It successfully relayed through space the first television pictures, telephone calls, and telegraph images, and provided the first live transatlantic television feed. Telstar 2 launched May 7, 1963. Telstar 1 and 2, though no longer functional ,still orbit the Earth today.
Portable radios were invented by John F. Mitchell in 1941 when he created the first 2-way radio that was small enough for soldiers to carry with them during World War II. These radios were called the “Walkie-talkie.”
Portable radios became available for home use in 1958 when Raytheon produced a pocket transistorized radio that cost $49.95.

Arlo Davy Guthrie is 70 years old today.
Arlo Guthrie’s only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman‘s "City of New Orleans". His song "Massachusetts" was named the official folk song of the state in which he has lived most of his adult life. He has also made several acting appearances.

Queen Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria) (May 24, 1819 – January 22, 1901)
Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 until 1901. A national emblem of morality, she oversaw a great period of expansion in the British Empire and had the longest reign of any monarch (nearly sixty-four years) until Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her in 2015.

Bob Dylan (Robert Allen Zimmerman) is 76 years old today.
Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan revolutionized folk music in the 1960’s with albums such as The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde and songs such as "The Times They Are a-Changin’," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Positively 4th Street." He changed his name to Dylan after the poet Dylan Thomas. Bod Dylan was born into a Jewish family, but later converted to Christianity.
