Henry Robinson Luce (April 3, 1898 – February 28, 1967)

Luce was a  magazine magnate who was called “the most
influential private citizen in America of his day".

On this day in 1903, Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso made
his U.S. debut with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in "Rigoletto."  He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses
of Europe and America, appearing in a wide variety of roles from
the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to
the dramatic.

During World War II, German war planes destroyed most of the
English town of Coventry when about 500 Luftwaffe bombers
attacked on this day in 1940.

American writer and Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner once stated
he wished he had written it himself, and D. H. Lawrence called it "one
of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world", and "the

On this day in 1943, Leonard Bernstein made his debut with the
New York Philharmonic when he filled in for the ailing Bruno
Walter prior to a nationally broadcast concert. Bernstein was
25 years old and was an assistant conductor at the time.

Copland was an American composer, composition teacher, writer,
and later a conductor of his own and other music. He was referred
to by his peers and critics as "the Dean of American Composers."

vanished during a storm in Lake Superior on this day in 1975.

Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev died of a heart attack at age 75
on this day in 1982. He was suceeded by Yuri V. Andropov.

Henry M. Stanley, journalist and explorer, found David Livingstone
on this day in 1871. Livingston was a missing Scottish missionary
in central Africa. Stanley delivered his famous greeting: "Dr.
Livingstone, I presume?"

On this day in 1969, "Sesame Street" made its debut on PBS.

Sesame Street is a long-running educational children’s television series that
combines live action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry. It is produced
by Sesame Workshop (formerly known as the Children’s Television Workshop)
and was created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett.

Prize for their DNA work.

     
The Anthrax scare hits CBS in New York on this day in
2001.    
        
   

CBS News announced that an employee in Dan Rather’s office had tested
positive for skin anthrax.

The FBI and Postal Service announced a $1 million reward for information
leading to the arrest of those responsible for the anthrax mailings.

On this day in 2001, four disciples of Osama bin Laden, convicted in the
1998 bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, were sentenced
to life in prison and ordered to pay $33 million in restitution to victims.

On this day in 1968, two black athletes, Tommie Smith (center) and John
Carlos, (right) were suspended by the U.S. Olympic Committee for giving
a "black power" salute during a ceremony at the Summer Olympics in
Mexico City.

Charles Edward Anderson Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017)

Chuck Berry is one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll who released influential
songs such as "Maybellene" and "Johnny B. Goode."

He became immortalized for songs such as "Roll Over Beethoven," which
reached  #29 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
