Ukraine’s Viktor Yanukovych declares win in disputed vote on this
date in 2004. He was poisoned during the election campaign when
it was confirmed that he ingested hazardous amounts of TCDD
, the
most potent dioxin and a contaminant in Agent Orange.

He suffered disfigurement as a result of the poisoning, but he has
since made made a full physical recovery (below).

Montana.

On this day in 1903, Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso made
his U.S. debut with the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City in "Rigoletto."  He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses
of Europe and America, appearing in a wide variety of roles from
the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to

On this day in 1889, New York World reporter Elizabeth Cochrane
(pen name Nellie Bly) began an attempt to surpass the fictitious
journey of Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg by traveling around the
world in less than 80 days. Bly succeeded by finishing the trek
the following January in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes.

On this day in 1943, Leonard Bernstein made his debut with the
New York Philharmonic when he filled in for the ailing Bruno
Walter prior to a nationally broadcast concert. Bernstein was
25 years old and

1998 bombing of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, were sentenced
to life in prison and ordered to pay $33 million in restitution to victims.

Chuck Berry is one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll who released influential
songs such as "Maybellene" and "Johnny B. Goode."

He became immortalized for songs such as "Roll Over Beethoven," which
reached  #29 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
