The funeral procession for President John F. Kennedy is pictured

On this day in 1963, the body of President John F. Kennedy was laid
to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. The funeral was attended by
heads of state and representatives from more than 100 countries,
with untold millions more watching on television.

President Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline, along with brother’s Bob
and Ted Kennedy together lit the “eternal flame”(above) which will
forever burn at the gravesite of JFK.

During the Revolutionary War on this day in 1783, British forces
evacuated New York, their last military position in the U.S. It was
also George Washington’s Triumphal Entry in New York City, as
depicted in the above painting. The events marked the cessation 
of hostilities between Great Britain and its former colonies.

On this day in 1973, President Richard Nixon told an Associated
Press managing editors meeting in Orlando, FL, "people have
got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I’m not        
a crook."

The U.S. Congress held its first session in Washington, DC,
in the newly completed north wing of the unfinished Capitol
building (above)  on this day in 1800. They moved from
Philadelphia.

was no winner named until more than a month later.

she became the first president’s wife to win public office. The state
of New York elected her to the U.S. Senate. (New York).

The middle section of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington
state collapsed during a windstorm on this day in 1940. The third
longest suspension span in the world opened to traffic on July 1,
1940.

On this day in 1986, the Ash-Shiraa, pro-Syrian Lebanese magazine,
first broke the story of U.S. arms sales to Iran to secure the release
of seven American hostages. The story turned into the Iran-Contra
affair.
