On this day in 1945, the Allies proclaimed V-J Day, victory over
Japan, a day after Japan agreed to surrender unconditionally.

Woodstock began on this day in 1969 at Max Yasqur’s
dairy farm in upstate New York.

Napoléon Bonaparte (August 15, 1769 – May 5, 1821)

Napoleon was the Emperor of France who rose to power in the aftermath of
the French Revolution in 1799 and waged war with every major European
power in a series of wars known as the Napoleonic Wars. After a series
of military failures he was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in
1815 and spent the last 6 years of his life in exile on the island of St.
Helena. 

On this day in 1947, India became independent from Britain and was divided into the countries of India and Pakistan. India had been
under British rule for about 200 years.

The Omagh bombing was a car bombing that took place on this day
in 1998 in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It was carried
out by a group calling themselves the Real Irish Republican Army,
a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) splinter group who
opposed the IRA’s ceasefire and the Good Friday Agreement.

The Panama Canal was officially opened to commercial traffic on
this day in 1914, as an American ship sailed from the Atlantic to
the Pacific Ocean. The first vessel to pass through the canal was
the American cargo and passenger ship SS Ancon.

"The Wizard of Oz" premiered in Hollywood, CA. on this day
in 1939. Judy Garland became famous for the movie’s song
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

Pahlavi, died of cancer in a hospital near Cairo, Egypt.

Bob Hope (Leslie Townes Hope) (May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003)

Bob Hope, was an English-American stand-up comedian, vaudevillian,
actor, singer, dancer, athlete, and author. With a career that spanned
nearly 80 years, Hope appeared in more than 70 short and feature films,
with 54 feature films with Hope as star, including a series of seven
"Road" musical comedy movies with Bing Crosby as Hope’s top-billed
partner.

In addition to hosting the Academy Awards show 19 times, more than
any other host, he appeared in many stage productions and television 
roles, and was the author of 14 books. Hope retired in 1997, and died at
the age of 100 in 2003, at his home in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of
Los Angeles.

that prohibited discrimination in the U.S. armed forces and federal employment.

Fidel Castro began his revolt against Fulgencio Batista with an unsuccessful attack on an army barracks in eastern Cuba on
this day in 1953. Castro eventually ousted Batista six years later.

Eva Perón was the wife of Argentine President Juan Perón (1895–1974) and
First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death from cancer in 1952. She
was 33.

George Bernard Shaw (July 26, 1856 – November 2, 1950) 

Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist, and political
activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics
extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote
more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man
and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan
(1923).

Sir Michael Philip Jagger is 75 today.

Mick Jagger is one of the most influential figures in the history of rock
and roll as frontman of the Rolling Stones, he was inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame with the Stones in 1989. He met future Rolling
Stones guitarist Keith Richards in primary school.

  The Apollo 11 astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean 
  on this day in 1969.

United States President Richard Nixon was in the central Pacific
recovery area to welcome the Apollo 11 astronauts aboard the USS Hornet, prime recovery ship for the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission, on July 24, 1969. The Apollo 11 astronauts are, from left,
Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. The crew was
quarantined after splashdown to ensure they did not bring back
any contamination from the moon.
