SANDY KOZEL

On this day in 1972, Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace was shot by
Arthur Bremer (below) in Laurel, MD while campaigning for the
United States presidency. Wallace was paralyzed by the shot.

On this day in 1948, Israel was attacked by Transjordan, Egypt, Syria,

On this day in 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the dissolution
of Standard Oil Company, ruling it was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Lyman Frank Baum, author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was
born on this day in 1856. He wrote a total of 14 novels in the Oz
series, plus 41 other novels, 83 short stories, over 200 poems,
and at least 42 scripts.

June Carter Cash was a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer,
comedian, and author who was a member of the Carter
Family and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash.

SANDY KOZEL

An expedition led by Captain Christopher Newport went ashore at
Jamestown, Virginia on this day in 1607. The group had arrived 
at the location the day before. This became the first permanent
English colony in America.

William Clark set off the famous expedition from Camp Dubois on this day in 1804. A few days later, in St. Louis, Meriwether Lewis joined the group. The group was known as the "Corps of Discovery."

On this day in 1948, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion (R) proclaimed
the independent State of Israel as British rule in Palestine came to an
end. U.S. President Harry S. Truman is on his left.

Skylab One was launched into orbit around Earth as the first U.S. manned space station on this day in 1973.

George Walton Lucas Jr. is 74 years old today. He was born in
Modesto, California.

Filmmaker George Lucas is best known as the creator of the Star Wars
and Indiana Jones franchises, as well as the founder of Lucasfilm and
Industrial Light & Magic. He was the chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm,
before selling it to The Walt Disney Company in 2012.

Francis Albert Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998)

Frank Sinatra was a singer, actor, and producer who was one of the most
popular and influential musical artists of the 20th century. He is one of the
best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million
records worldwide. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian immigrants,
Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry
James and Tommy Dorsey.

Sinatra died with his wife at his side at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los
Angeles on May 14, 1998, aged 82, after a heart attack. Sinatra was in ill
health during the last few years of his life, and was frequently hospitalized
for heart and breathing problems, high blood pressure, pneumonia and
bladder cancer. He was further diagnosed as having dementia. He had
made no public appearances following a heart attack in February 1997

ROSS SIMPSON

Stevland Hardaway Morris (Judkins) is 68 years old today. He was
born in Saginaw, MI.

Motown prodigy and multi-instrumentalist who broke the record for Grammy Awards held by a solo artist with twenty-two titles and released over thirty
top ten hits during his career. He signed with Motown Records when he was
eleven years old. Stevie Wonder released the hit song "Fingertips (Pt. 2)"
when he was thirteen.

CAMILLE BOHANNON

The Soviet Union announced an end to the Berlin Blockade on this
day in 1949.

It was on this day in 1932 that baby Lindbergh (below) was found
more than two months after he was kidnapped from his family’s
Hopewell, New Jersey mansion.

Burt Freeman Bacharach is 90 years old today. He was born in
Kansas City, Missouri.

Burt Bacharach is a composer, songwriter, record producer, pianist, and
singer who has composed hundreds of popular hit songs from the late
1950s through the 1980s, many in collaboration with popular lyricist Hal
David. A six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time Academy Award 
winner, Bacharach’s songs have been recorded by more than 1,000
different artists. As of 2014, he had written 73 US and 52 UK Top 40 hits
and is considered one of the most important composers of 20th-century
popular music.

Garry Kasparov, world chess champion, lost his first ever multi-game match on this day in 1997. He lost to IBM’s chess computer Deep
Blue. It was the first time a computer had beaten a world-champion player.

Irving Berlin (Israel Beilin) (May 11, 1888 – September 22, 1989)

 Composer and lyricist, Irving Berlin is widely considered one of the
greatest songwriters in American history. His music forms a great
part of the Great American Songbook. Born in Imperial Russia,
Berlin arrived in the United States at the age of five. He published
his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy", in 1907, receiving 33 cents
for the publishing rights, and had his first major international hit,
"Alexander’s Ragtime Band" in 1911. He also was an owner of the
Music Box Theatre on Broadway.

Robert Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981)

Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter who became an
international musical and cultural icon, blending mostly reggae,
ska, and rocksteady in his compositions. Starting out in 1963
with the group the Wailers, he forged a distinctive songwriting
and vocal style that would later resonate with audiences
worldwide. The Wailers would go on to release some of the
earliest reggae records with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry
and after the group disbanded in 1974, Marley then
pursued a solo career upon his relocation to England.

Marley died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University
of Miami Hospital), at age 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs
and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were
"Money can’t buy life”.
