that prohibited discrimination in the U.S. armed forces and federal employment.

Fidel Castro began his revolt on this day in 1953 against Fulgencio Batista with
an unsuccessful attack on an army barracks in eastern Cuba. Castro eventually
ousted Batista six years later.

Sir Michael Philip Jagger is 74 years old today.

Mick Jagger is one of the most influential figures in the history of rock and roll
as frontman of The Rolling Stones. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame with the Stones in 1989. He met future Rolling Stones guitarist
Keith Richards in primary school. He initially intended on going into politics
or economics. In 2003, he was knighted.

Mick Jagger has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone
magazine over twenty times since 1968.

Road to Utopia is a 1946 comedy film directed by Hal Walker and starring Bing
Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour. Filmed in 1943 but not released until
1946, Road to Utopia is the fourth film of the "Road to …" series. Written by
Melvin Frank and Norman Panama,

"Begin the Beguine" is a popular song written by Cole Porter. It
became such a classic during World War II that Max Beckmann
adopted the title for a painting in 1946 that is now at University
of Michigan Museum of Art (below).

Hitler failed on this day in 1944. The bomb exploded at Hitler’s Rastenburg headquarters. He was only wounded.

Sir Edmund Percival "Ed" Hillary
(July 20, 1919 – January 11, 2008)

Adventurer and philanthropist Sir Edmund Hillary became one
of the first people to reach the top of Everest with the help of his
guide, Tensing Norgay. He became a beekeeper during the
summer so as to keep himself available to climb in the winter.

His adventures led to him being named one of the most influential
people by Time Magazine of the 20th century.

Carlos Santana is 70 years old today.

Guitarist Carlos Santana blended rock with Latin American music and fronted
Santana. He won the Best Rock Album Award and the Album of the Year
Award for Supernatural in 2000. He began playing the guitar when he was
eight and turned down an opportunity to attend Humbolt State University to
pursue a career in music.

In 2003 Rolling Stone magazine listed Santana at number 20 on their list of
the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has won 10 Grammy Awards and
three Latin Grammy Awards.
