FUTURE PRESIDENT FILED UFO REPORT

Jimmy Carter Saw a UFO On This Day in 1973

Future President Jimmy Carter filed a report with the
International UFO Bureau on September 18, 1973,
claiming he had seen an Unidentified Flying Object
(
UFO) in October 1969.

During the presidential campaign of 1976, Democratic
challenger Carter was forthcoming about his belief that
he had seen a UFO. He described waiting outside for a
Lion’s Club Meeting in Leary, Georgia, to begin, at about
7:30 p.m., when he spotted what he called “the darndest
thing I’ve ever seen” in the sky.

Carter, as well as 10 to 12 other people who witnessed
the same event, described the object as “very bright
[with] changing colors and about the size of the moon.”

Carter reported that “the object hovered about 30 degrees
above the horizon and moved in toward the earth and away
before disappearing into the distance.” He later told a
reporter that, after the experience, he vowed never again
to ridicule anyone who claimed to have seen a UFO.

A PRESIDENT WAS SHOT ON THIS DAY IN 1901

On September 6, 1901, President William McKinley was shaking
hands at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo,
New York,
when a 28-year-old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz approached
him and
fired two shots into his chest. The president rose slightly
on his toes before collapsing forward, saying “be careful how you
tell my wife.”

The president died on September 14 after his wound became
infected. Caught in the act, Czolgosz was tried, convicted, and
executed by the State of New York seven weeks later on
October 29, 1901.

The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American
students enrolled in
Little Rock Central High School in 1957.

Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis on this
day, in which the students were initially prevented from entering
the
racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President
Dwight D. Eisenhower.

LBJ RECEIVED NOMINATION ON THIS DAY IN 1964

Our Presidents • Campaign Slogans, 1964 “All the Way with LBJ,”...

Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated to run for the presidency at
the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

His running mate would be Hubert H. Humphrey. Former Vice
President Johnson had assumed the reigns of government in
November 1963 when President
Kennedy was assassinated.

Upon assuming office, he inherited a commitment to Vietnam
where Kennedy had sent military advisors to support the South Vietnamese government in Saigon.

Following the Tonkin Gulf incident earlier in August when
North Vietnamese torpedo boats reportedly attacked U.S.
destroyers, Congress passed the
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
empowering Johnson to “take all necessary measures to repel
an armed attack against the forces of the United States and to
prevent further aggression.”
