this day in 1227.

Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on
this day in 1920. The Amendment guaranteed the right of all women 
in America to vote. 

James Meredith graduated from the University of Mississippi on this
day in 1963. He was the first black man to accomplish this feat.

James Howard Meredith turned 85 in June.

Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel "Lolita" was published
on this day in 1958.

Charles Robert Redford Jr. is 82 years old today. He was born in
Santa Monica, California.

Actor and director Robert Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival. He
starred in classics such as All the President’s Men (1976), The Sting (1973),
and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). His directorial debut,
Ordinary People (1980) received the Academy Award for Best Picture and
earned him the Academy Award for Best Director.

law on this day in 1935. The act created unemployment insurance
and pension plans for the elderly.

On this day in 1969, British troops arrived in Northern Ireland to
intervene in sectarian violence between Protestants and Roman
Catholics.

Stephen Glenn Martin is 73 years old today. Born in Waco, Texas.

Comedian, actor and musician Steve Martin is best known films include 
The Jerk (1979), Father of the Bride (1991), Roxanne (1987), Three Amigos
(1986), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 
(1987). He hosted the Academy Awards in 2001, 2003 and 2010 and he has
hosted NBC’s Saturday Night Live on a number of occasions. 

While he has played banjo since an early age, and included music in his
comedy routines from the beginning of his professional career, he has
increasingly dedicated his career to music since the 2000s, acting less
and spending much of his professional life playing banjo, recording,
and touring with various bluegrass acts, including Earl Scruggs.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (August 13, 1926 – November 25, 2016)

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock
(August 13, 1899 – April 29, 1980)  

Iconic director Alfred Hitchcock is known as The
Master of Suspense for his classic films such as 
Psycho (1960), Rear Window (1954), Dial M for
Murder (1954), and The Birds (1963). One of the
most influential filmmakers of all time, he directed
over 50 feature films, and his work continues to
circulate through film circles and classic movie
channels.

Mickey Charles Mantle

Mantle played his entire Major League Baseball career with the New
