On this day in 1965, the United States landed about 3,500 Marines in South Vietnam to defend the U.S. air base at Da Nag. They were the
first
American combat troops to land in Vietnam. They joined 23,000 American military advisors already in Vietnam.

Joseph Paul DiMaggio (November 25, 1914 – March 8, 1999)

Joe DiMaggio was a baseball center fielder who played his entire 13-year
career in
Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees. He is widely
considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and is perhaps
best known for his 56-game
hitting streak (May 15 – July 16, 1941), a record
that still stands. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 and
was voted the sport’s greatest living player in a poll taken during the
baseball centennial year of 1969.

DiMaggio, a heavy smoker for much of his adult life, was admitted to
Memorial Regional Hospital in
Hollywood, Florida, on October 12, 1998,
for lung cancer surgery and remained there for 99 days. He returned to
his home in
Hollywood, Florida, on January 19, 1999; he died there at
age 84 on March 8.

On this day in 1868, the United States House of Representatives impeached President Andrew Johnson due to his attempt to
dismiss Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The
U.S. Senate later acquitted Johnson on May 26, 1868.

Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875) was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He was
was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham
Lincoln.

On this day in 1945, the 28th Regiment of the Fifth Marine Division of
the
U.S. Marines reached the top of Mount Surabachi. A photograph
of these Marines raising the American flag was taken by American
photographer Joe Rosenthal. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his
iconic World War ll photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. it
became one of the best-known photos of the war and was actually
the second flag raised on that day in 1945.

During World War II on this  day in 1945, about 30,000 United States
Marines landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima

William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. is 79-years-old today.


Singer, songwriter, record producer, and former record executive
Smokey Robinson was the founder and front man of the
Motown
vocal group
the Miracles, for which he was also chief songwriter
and producer. Robinson led the group from its 1955 origins as
"The Five Chimes" until 1972 when he announced a retirement
from the group to focus on his role as Motown’s vice president,
but Robinson returned to the music industry as a solo artist the
following year.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame
in 1987.
