CAMILLE BOHANNON

The Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on students during an
anti-Vietnam war protest at Kent State University on this day in
1970. Four students were killed and nine others were wounded.

Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman prime minister on
this day in 1979.

On this day in 1886, a bomb exploded on the fourth day of a workers’ strike in Chicago, IL. Eight people died in the violence during that 
day.

Thirteen civil rights activists, dubbed "Freedom Riders," began a bus
trip through the South on this day in 1961.

After a mob attacked a bus with protesters in Alabama, hundreds
more joined the cause.

The notion of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
began with Louis B. Mayer, head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.The
official Articles of Incorporation for the organization were filed on

Francis Gary Powers’ U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet
Union on this day in 1969. Powers was taken prisoner.

in the world at the time.

The movie "Citizen Kane," directed and starring Orson Welles,

feature film and was nominated for Academy Awards in nine
categories, it won an Academy Award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Herman J. Mankiewicz and Welles. The film is
Considered  by many critics, filmmakers, and fans to be the

Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide on this day in 1945,
one day after their wedding. One week later Germany surrendered
unconditionally.

to have committed suicide.

Communists North Vietnamese troops entered the Independence
Palace of South Vietnam in Saigon on this day in 1975. Eleven
Marines lifted off of the U.S. Embassy were the last soldiers to
evacuate.

George Washington’s inauguration as first President of America took
place at Federal Hall in New York City on this day in 1789. It became
the first U.S. national holiday.

Willie Hugh Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas in 1933. He’s now 85.

Country singer, activist, poet, songwriter, actor, and author Willie Nelson
helped create Farm Aid. He has written many country hits, including
“ On the Road Again”,"Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Hello Walls."

Guglielmo Marconi, (1st Marquis of Marconi) (April 25, 1874 – July 20, 1937) 

Marconi was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer known for his
pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his
development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system. He is
credited as the inventor of radio, and he shared the 1909 Nobel
Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of
their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy".

It was on this day in 1507.

On this day in 1945, U.S. and Soviet forces met at Torgau, Germany 
near the Elbe River.

The U.S. Hubble Space Telescope was placed into Earth’s orbit on
this day in 1990. It was released by the space shuttle Discovery
(below).

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996)

The Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, won thirteen Grammy Awards and
became a legend for singing "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall"
and "I’m Making Believe." Her rendition of "Summertime" with Louis
Armstrong is considered one of the best collaborations in music
history.

Ernest Taylor Pyle  (August 3, 1900 – April 18, 1945)

Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed by
Japanese machine-gun fire on the island of Ie Shima off the coast
of Okinawa. Extremely popular, especially with the average GI,
whose life and death he reported on (American infantrymen braved
enemy fire to recover Pyle’s body), Pyle had been at the London Blitz
of 1941 and saw action in North Africa, Italy, France, and the Pacific.

 
Indiana University celebrated The Media School with a formal inauguration of the new school and dedication of the above
sculpture of World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle in 2014.
