On this day in 1964, The Beatles made the first of three record-
breaking appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show." 73 million
people watched the show. It was their American TV debut.

During World War II on this day in 1943, the battle of Guadalcanal
ended with an American victory over Japanese forces.

ended with the loss of nearly 30,000 Japanese soldiers.

Yuri Andropov died on this day in 1984.

Yuri Andropov was General Secretary of the Central Committee
of the Communist Party and Chairman of the Presidium from
June 16, 1983 until his death in 1984.

Alice Malsenior Walker is 74 today. She was born in Putnam County, Georgia.

Alice Walker is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist
who wrote the novel The Color Purple (1982) for which she won the National
Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also wrote the novels
Meridian (1976) and The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970), among many
other works.

During World War II on this day in 1945, U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet
leader Josef Stalin began a conference at Yalta to outline plans
for Germany’s defeat.

On this day in 1997, a civil jury in California found O.J. Simpson liable 
in the death of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Goldman’s parents were awarded $8.5 million in compensatory
damages.

Patricia (Patty) Hearst was kidnapped in Berkeley, CA, by the Symbionese Liberation Army on this day in 1974.

On December 11, 2003, the Massachusetts Senate put forward legislative
language creating civil unions for same-sex couples to the SJC, asking if
it satisfied the court’s requirements. On February 4, 2004, the court replied
that it was unacceptable to allow different-sex couples marriages but same-
sex couples only civil unions, that the distinction between marriage and civil
unions constituted unconstitutional discrimination, even if the rights and obligations attached to each were identical. It called the difference between
the terms marriage and civil union "a considered choice of language that
reflects a demonstrable assigning of same-sex, largely homosexual, couples
to second-class status."

On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage.

A 7.4 earthquake in Guatemala and Honduras on this day in 1976 
killed more than 22,000 people.

that ousted President Milton Obote.

James Augustine Aloysius Joyce
(February 2, 1882- January 13, 1941)

James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet. He is
regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the
20th century. Joyce is best known for his landmark 1922 work, Ulysses.

Eugene Curran Kelly (August 23, 1912 – February 2, 1996)

Gene Kelly was a dancer, actor of film, stage, and television,
singer, film director, producer, and choreographer. He was
known for his energetic and athletic dancing style.

CARLATA BRADLEY

NASA’s space shuttle Columbia exploded while re-entering the
Earth’s atmosphere on this day in 2003. All seven astronauts on
board were killed.

This picture was taken by Eddie Adams in Saigon on February 1,
1968, the second day of North Vietnam’s Tet offensive. It captures
the summary execution of ­Nguyễn Văn Lém by Brigadier General

William Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 – November 16, 1960)

Often referred to as "The King of Hollywood", Clark Gable began his
career as a stage actor and appeared as an extra in silent films between
1924 and 1926, and progressed to supporting roles with a few films for
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1931. The following year, he landed his first
leading his first leading Hollywood role and over the next three decades
he became a leading man in more than 60 motion pictures.

capitals.

Adolf Hitler was named the German Chancellor on this day in 1933
by President Paul von Hindenburg (right).

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945)

Franklin Roosevelt (FDR) served as the 32nd President of the United
States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A Democrat, he won a record
four presidential elections and emerged as a central figure in world
events during the mid-20th century. Roosevelt directed the United
States federal government during most of the Great Depression,
implementing his New Deal domestic agenda in response to the
worst economic crisis in U.S. history.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948) 

Indian political and spiritual leader and activist Mahatma Gandhi was
murdered by a Hindu extremist on this day in 1948.

In Northern Ireland on this day in 1972, British soldiers shot and
killed thirteen Roman Catholic civil rights marchers. The day is
known as "Bloody Sunday."

Earle Graser portrayed “The Lone Ranger” in the 1930s.

"The Lone Ranger" was heard on radio for the first time on
this day in 1933. The program ran for 2,956 episodes and
ended in 1955.
