Japan surrendered to the U.S. aboard the USS Missouri on this
day in 1945, ending World War II. The war ended six years and
one day after it began.

During the U.S. Civil War on this day in 1864, Union forces led by  
Gen. William T. Sherman (below) occupied Atlanta following the
retreat of the Confederates.

The Great Fire of London broke out on this day in 1666. The fire
burned for three days destroying 10,000 buildings including St.
Paul’s Cathedral. Only 6 people were killed.

It was on this day in 1969.

It was announced on this day in 1985,  the remains of the Titanic
had been found on September 1 by a U.S. and French expedition 
560 miles off Newfoundland. The luxury liner had been missing 
for 73 years. The tragedy of the RMS Titanic rocked the world
on April 15, 1912.

(FoxNews) – The storied blue sash worn by George Washington (above) during
the Revolutionary War has gone on display at Philadelphia’s Museum of the
American Revolution. The sash, on loan from Harvard’s Peabody Museum of
Ethnography and Archaeology, was rediscovered several years ago by Dr.
Philip Mead, chief historian and director of curatorial affairs at the Museum of
the American Revolution. Mead found the artifact at the Peabody Museum,
where it had essentially been hidden in plain sight for decades. He spent years
studying the sash before concluding that it was indeed the one worn by
Washington.

The sash (below) which is on display until Oct. 9, is featured with a 1776 portrait
of Washington by Philadelphia artist Charles Willson Peale, which depicts him
wearing the sash. The portrait is on loan from the Brooklyn Museum.

and much of the area was buried in volcanic ash.

The planet Pluto was reclassified as a "dwarf planet" by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Pluto’s status was changed due to the IAU’s
new rules for an object qualifying as a planet. Pluto met two of the three
rules because it orbits the sun and is large enough to assume a nearly
round shape. However, since Pluto has an oblong orbit and overlaps the
orbit of Neptune it disqualified Pluto as a planet.
 

On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly
across the U.S. non-stop. The trip from Los Angeles, CA to Newark,
NJ, took about 19 hours in her Lockheed Vega (above).

On this day in 1989, Pete Rose, the manager of the Cincinnati Reds,
was banned from baseball for life after being accused of gambling
on baseball.

Japan agreed to surrender unconditionally.

It began on this day in 1969.

India became independent from Britain and was divided into the countries of India and Pakistan. India had been under British
about 200 years.

It was on this day in 1998.

On this day in 1914, the Panama Canal was officially opened to commercial traffic as an American ship sailed from the Atlantic
to the Pacific Ocean. The first vessel to pass through the canal
was the American cargo and passenger ship SS Ancon.
 

"The Wizard of Oz" premiered in Hollywood, CA. on this day in 1939
and Judy Garland became famous for the movie’s song “Somewhere
Over the Rainbow.” 

The Hollywood premiere of the movie was at Grauman’s Chinese
Theatre (above).
