Andy Griffith is a actor, director, producer, Grammy Award-winning Southern-
gospel singer and a writer. In 1957 Griffith made his film debut starring in Elia
Kazan’s epic film A Face in the Crowd. Griffith starred in a one-hour teleplay
version of No Time for sergeants in March 1955 on The united Steel Hour on
ABC. Griffith later reprised his role for the film version of the same name in
1958. He became better known for his TV roles, playing the lead characters
in the 1960-1968 sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show on CBS, and in the 1986 to
1995 legal drama, Matlock on NBC and ABC. Griffith was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush on
November 9, 2005.
