MERYL STREEP IS 62 TODAY

Meryl Streep has worked in theatre, television and film. She is widely regarded
as one of the most talented and respected actresses of the modern era. Streep
made her professional debut on stage in 1971’s The Playboy of Seville. Her
screen debut came in 1977 with the television movie The Deadliest Season. She
made her film debut with Julie. Successful roles soon followed such as The Deer
Hunter
in 1978, which gave Meryl her first Oscar nomination and Kramer vs.Kramer
in 1979  which won her and Oscar. Streep later won an Academy Award for Best
Actress for her performance in Sophie’s Choice (1982). Meryl Streep has received
a total of 25 Golden Globe nominations, winning seven, more nominations than any
other actor in the history of the award. In 2004,she was awarded the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Millionaire is a TV drama anthology series that aired on CBS from
January 19, 1955 to June 8, 1960, originally sponsored by Colgate-
Palmolive.The show centered around the stories of unknown people who
were given, seemingly out of nowhere, one million dollars from a benefactor
who with one exception, insisted they never know him. Marvin Miller (above)
starred as Michael Anthony and veteran character actor Paul Frees (below)
was the voice of John Beresford Tipton.

Chuck Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it opened in 1986. Today, at the age 
of 84, Berry continues to play live.

Lindsay

Actress Lindsay Jean Wagner was born near Pasadena, California. She later
moved with her parents to Portland, Oregon, where she attended David Douglas
High School and appeared in a number of school plays. She also studied at the
University of Oregon.  She is probably most widely known for her portrayal of
Jaime Sommers in the ABC/NBC television series The Bionic Woman, 1976-
1978.Wagner won an Emmy award for her work in the series. She has since 
maintained a lengthy career in a variety of other film and TV productions.

THE GI BILL OF RIGHTS SIGNED ON THIS DATE IN 1944

On June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (above) signed into law the
Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill of
Rights to provide broad benefits for veterans of the war. By the time the
original G.I. Bill ended in July 1956, 7.8 million World War II veterans had
participated in an education or training program and 2.4 million veterans
had home loans backed by the Veterans’ Administration (VA).
