MAGAZINE BEGAN PUBLICATION ON THIS DATE IN 1942

First issue of Yank 

Yank, the Army Weekly was a magazine published by the U.S. military during 
World War ll. The idea for the magazine came from Egbert White, who worked
on the Star sand Stripes during World War l. He proposed the idea to the Army
in 1942, and accepted a commission as Lieutenant Colonel. He was the overall commander, Major Franklin S. Forsberg was the business manager and Major
Hartzell Spence was the first editor of the magazine. The publication was written
by enlisted men only and was made available to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen
serving overseas. It was published at facilities around the world for a total of 21
editions in 17  countries. Yank was the most widely read magazine in the history
of the U.S. Military, achieving a worldwide circulation of more than 2.6 million. It
featured the G.I. Joe cartoons by Dave Breger and the Sad Sack cartoons by
Sgt. George Baker. The paper’s motto was “written by the men…for the men
in the service”

Ralph Rexford Bellamy was a actor with a radio, stage, film and TV career that 
spanned sixty-two years. He appeared on Broadway in one of his most famous 
roles, as Franklin Delano Roosevelt (below) in Sunrise at Campobello. In 1984, 
he was presented with a Life Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild, 
and in 1987 received an Honorary Academy Award "for his unique artistry and 
his distinguished service to the profession of acting". He gave his final acting 
performance in Pretty Woman (1990).

POLITICAL SCANDAL BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1972

Watergate is a complex (above) in Washington, D.C.that was the location of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. Five men were arrested for burglarizing the office of the committee. An investigation discovered that the men
had connections to the Committee to Re-elect President Nixon.The event was
the beginning of the Watergate affair. Additionally, various other crimes were
exposed, such as political espionage and corruption. In the end, president Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974 and Gerald Ford became the next president.The affair 
also resulted in the indictment trial, conviction and incarceration of several Nixon administration officials.

Arthur W. "Art" Bell is a broadcaster and author, known primarily as one of  
the founders and the original host of the paranormal-themed radio program
Coast to Coast Am. He also created and formerly hosted its companion show, Dreamland. Semi-retired from Coast to Coast AM since 2003, Art hosted the
show many weekends for the following four years. He announced his retirement
from weekend hosting on July 1, 2007 but occasionally serves as a guest host. Art
was always interested in radio and at the age of 13 became a licensed amateur
radio operator (call sign W6OBB).

Art Bell served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic during the Vietnam War. After leaving military service he stayed in Asia, living on the on what is now the Japanese island
of Okinawa where he worked as a disc jockey for KSBK in the capital city of Naha. It
was the only non-military English language station in Japan. In 2009, Art moved to
the Philippines. Bell was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame on November 8, 2008.
