Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid movement that helps
other alcoholics achieve sobriety. Now claiming more than 2 million members, AA
was founded in 1935 by William Wilson, a New York stock broker and Dr. Robert
Smith an Akron, Ohio surgeon (below). With other early members Wilson and Smith
developed AA’s Twelve Step program of spiritual and character development.
