LIFE ~ ON THIS DAY IN 1942
CEREAL FOUNDER C.W. POST
Charles William Post (October 26, 1854 – May 9, 1914)
Post, was a breakfast cereal and foods manufacturer and a pioneer in the
prepared-food industry. After visiting the Battle Creek Sanitarium operated
by John Harvey Kellogg, Post was inspired to start his own cereal company
based on Kellogg’s products. He founded Postum Cereal Co. in 1895. His
first product was Postum cereal beverage and the first breakfast cereal,
Grape Nuts, debuted in 1897. In 1904, C.W. Post followed up the Grape
Nuts label with his own brand of corn flakes, which was initially called
Elijah’s Manna and later renamed Post Toasties in 1908.
JACLYN SMITH IS 64 TODAY
Actress Jaclyn Ellen Smith is best known for the role of Kelly Garrett in the
ABC television series Charlie’s Angels (1976-1981). She began developing
and marketing her own brands of clothing and perfume. Jaclyn has been
voted one of the most beautiful women in the world.
GUNFIGHT TOOK PLACE ON THIS DAY IN 1881
The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was approximately a 30-second gunfight that took
place in the afternoon of Wednesday October 26, 1881 in Tombstone, Arizona.Tom
and Frank McLaury along with Billy Clanton were killed; Morgan and Virgil Earp and
John “Doc” Holliday were wounded and survived. Wyatt Earp was unharmed. It is regarded as the most legendary gunfight in the history of the Old West.
‘’DOONESBURY’’ DUBTED ON THIS DAY IN 1970
Frequently political in nature, Doonesbury is a comic strip by cartoonist Garry
Trudeau (above). The main character, Michael Doonesbury life is viewed from
his college years to a young senior citizen. The name “Doonesbury” is a merging
of the word doone (prep school slang for “someone who is out to lunch”) and the
surname of Charles Phillsbury who was Trudeau’s roommate while at Yale
University. The strip is written and penciled by Garry Trudeau, then it is
inked and lettered by his assistant Don Carlton. Doonesbury was the
first comic to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
