The Xerox 914, invented by Chester Carlson (below), was the first successful  
commercial plain paper copier. It was first introduced to the public on September
16, 1959 and revolutionized the document-copying industry. The original machine
was presented to the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of American History.

COMEDIAN PHYLLIS DILLER HAS DIED AT 95

            Phyllis Diller (July 17, 1917 – August 20, 2012)

 

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who
aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with
her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home. 

"She died peacefully in her sleep and with a smile on her face," said her
longtime manager, Milton Suchin.

Diller, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999, was found by her
son, Perry Diller. The cause of her death has not been released.

THE BEATLES LAST TIME IN THE STUDIO

On this day, forty three years ago, was the last time that all four of The Beatles were
together in a recording studio for the last time.They completed "I Want You" for the 
"Abby Road" album at EMI’s London studio.

DIRECTOR TONY SCOTT IS DEAD AT 68

(AP) – Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder"
and "Beverly Hills Cop II," died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County
bridge, authorities said.

Scott’s death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner’s 
Lt. Joe Bale said. He was the younger brother of fellow film director Ridley Scott.
