RADIO SERIES BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1949

The series “Father  Knows Best” began on NBC Radio. It starred Robert Young 
(above) as the General Insurance agent Jim Anderson. His wife Margaret was
first portrayed by June Whitley and later by Jean Vander Pyl. The Anderson
children were Betty (Rhonda Williams), Bud (Ted Donaldson), and Kathy
(Norma Jean Nillson). The series ran until March 25, 1954. It made the
switch to television later that year.

RACE CAR DRIVER DIES AT 37

Justin Boyd Wilson (July 31, 1978 – August 24, 2015) 

Wilson suffered a traumatic brain injury while competing in a IndyCar Series 
race at the Pocono Raceway on Sunday afternoon. He was struck by a large
piece of debris from another driver’s car following a single-car accident and
was airlifted in critical condition to a local hospital where he remained in a
coma and died today.

SINGLE RELEASED ON THIS DAY IN 1964

On August 30th 1964, the Beatles’ "Matchbox" and the flip-side, "Slow Down",
both entered Billboard’s Hot Top 100 chart, "Matchbox" at position #81 and
"Slow Down" at #99. "Matchbox" would peak at #17for one week on October
11th, 1964, while "Slow Down" reached its highest position at #25 for one
week on October 4th, 1964.

There are suggestions that Carl Perkins, the writer of the song “Matchbox”, 
may have been present in the studio during the recording  session.
