After decades of bloody animosity, representatives of Israel and Palestine
meet on the South Lawn of the White House and sign a framework for
peace. The “Declaration of Principles” was the first agreement between
the Israelis and Palestinians towards ending their conflict and sharing
the holy land between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea that
they both claim as their homeland.

Israel and Palestine signed their first major agreement. Palestine was
granted limited self-government in the Gaza Strip and in Jericho.

(FoxNews) – Two Civil War cannonballs have been discovered on a South 
Carolina beach in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

A spokesman for the city of Folly Beach told Fox News that some seashell
hunters spotted a suspicious item in the area of the old Coast Guard Base
at the east end of the beach. “It was reported to us as potentially older
unexplored ordnance,” he explained via email. “As per our policy, we
notified the Charleston County EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] team
who also responded and assisted with notifying the military EOD team.”

The spokesman added,“It was determined to be a cannonball (one larger
8” shell and one 3” shell)… “We were advised the military EOD team will
handle disposing of the ordnance.”

A 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first
person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a
building. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.

In the United States, the first laws against operating a motor vehicle
while under the influence of alcohol went into effect in New York in
1910. In 1936, Dr. Rolla Harger, a professor of biochemistry and
toxicology, patented the Drunkometer (below), a balloon-like device
into which people would breathe to determine whether they were
inebriated. In 1953, Robert Borkenstein, a former Indiana state
police captain and university professor who had collaborated with
Harger on the Drunkometer, invented the Breathalyzer. Easier-to-
use and more accurate than the Drunkometer, the Breathalyzer
was the first practical device and scientific test available to police o
fficers to establish whether someone had too much to drink.

Despite the stiff penalties and public awareness campaigns, drunk driving
remains a serious problem in the United States. Each year, roughly 15,00
people die in alcohol-related crashes and almost 1.5 million people are
arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
