Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924)

Wilson served as the 28th President of the United States from 1913 to 1921
as a member of the Democratic Party.

On this day in 1832, John C. Calhoun became the first vice president
of the United States to resign, stepping down over differences with President Jackson.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn published "Gulag Archipelago,"
an expose of the Soviet prison system on this day in
1973.

Solzhenitsyn bravely wrote about the brutality of Stalin’s network
of gulags.

The musical "On the Town" opened in New York City on
this day in 1944 and ran for 462 performances. It featured
the song, "New York, New York." It was made into a film
in 1949.

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. is 63 today.

Popular actor Denzel Washington won an Academy Award
for Best Actor for his role in the 2001 film Training Day.

Bob Glidden  (August 18, 1944 – December 17, 2017)

Ten-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Bob Glidden passed away on Sunday
after being hospitalized earlier in the month for an undisclosed illness.

Glidden was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2005
and in 2001, a panel ranked him fourth in the National Hot Rod Association
Top 50 Drivers, 1951-2000. The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America inducted
Glidden in 1994. He came out of retirement to drive occasionally through the
2010 season, and although never won again, he left a championship legacy.

On this day in 1944, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the wartime relocation of Japanese-Americans, but also stated that undeniably
loyal Americans of Japanese ancestry could not be detained.

The United States began the heaviest bombing of North Vietnam
during the Vietnam War on this day in 1972. The attack ended 12
days later.

On this day in 1892, Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker" publicly
premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Steven Allan Spielberg is 71 years old today. He was
born in Cincinnati, OH.

Celebrated director Steven Spielberg achieved box office 
records with the blockbuster films Jaws (1975) E.T. (1982)
and Jurassic Park (1993). He received the Academy Award
for Best Director for the films Schindler’s List (1993) and 
Saving Private Ryan (1998). He also directed the action/
adventure classic trilogy Indiana Jones, starring Harrison
Ford, in the ’80s.

The first president of the United States, George Washington,
died at the age 67 on this day in 1799. The diagnosis of his final
illness and the immediate cause of his death have been subjects 
of debate since the day he died.

Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (front left) became the first man
to reach the South Pole on this day in 1911. He reached the area 35
days ahead of Captain Robert F. Scott.

On this day in 1995, the presidents of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Serbia, Croatia signed an internationally brokered formal peace
agreement in Paris to end fighting in Bosnia.

Roger Eugene Maris (September 10, 1934 – December 14, 1985)

Maris was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1983. In response, Maris
organized the annual Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament to raise money for
cancer research and treatment. He died at age 51 on December 14, 1985 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.

U.S. forces captured ousted dictator Saddam Hussein on this
day in 2003.

Authorities in Poland imposed martial law on this day in 1981 in an 
attempt to crackdown on the Solidarity labor movement. Martial law 
ended formally in 1983.

In America on this day in 1862, an estimated 11,000 Northern
troops were killed or wounded when Union forces were defeated
by the Confederates under the command of General Robert E.
Lee, at the Battle of  Fredericksburg.

The Korean war campaign for the Chosin Reservoir began on
this day in 1950.

Richard Wayne Van Dyke is 92 years old today.

Van Dyke of The Dick Van Dyke Show on CBS from 1961 – 1966
and Diagnosis: Murder on CBS from 1993 – 2001. He won a SAG
Life Achievement Award in 2012 and a Disney Legend Award in
1998. He starred in the 1964 classic Mary Poppins and was also
cast in the film’s sequel, Mary Poppins Returns, which is slated
for a 2018 release.

During the late 1940s, Van Dyke was a radio DJ in Danville, IL.
and served as a radio announcer in the United States Army Air
Corps during World War II and later transferred to the Special
Services as an entertainer.
