Althea Gibson won the Wimbledon women’s singles tennis title on
this day in 1957. She was the first black athlete to win the event.

Roy Rogers (Leonard Franklin Slye)
(November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998)

Roy Rogers was one of the most popular Western stars of his
era. Known as the "King of the Cowboys", he appeared in over
100 films and numerous radio and television episodes of The
Roy Rogers Show.

Rogers died of congestive heart failure on July 6, 1998. He had
been residing in Apple Valley, CA. Roy was buried at Sunset Hills 
Memorial Park in Apple Valley, as was his wife Dale Evans three 
years later.

Elvis Presley’s first commercial recording session took place in
Memphis, TN. on this day in 1954. He recorded "That’s All Right
(Mama)" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky."

The bikini bathing suit, created by Louis Reard, made its debut
during a fashion show at the Molitor Pool in Paris on this day in
1946. Micheline Bernardini wore the two-piece outfit.

Arthur Ashe became the first black man to win a Wimbledon singles
title when he defeated Jimmy Connors on this day in 1975.

On this day in 1947, Larry Doby signed a contract with the
Cleveland Indians, becoming the first black player in the
American League.

Theodore Williams (Theodore Samuel Williams)
(August 30, 1918 – July 5, 2002)

Ted Williams played his entire 19-year Major League
Baseball career as a left fielder for the Boston Red S
ox from 1939 to 1960, only interrupted by service time
during World War II and the Korean War. Nicknamed
"The Kid", Williams is regarded as one of the greatest
players in baseball history, despite being a below
average defensive left fielder. Williams was a nineteen-
time All-Star, a two-time recipient of the American
League Most Valuable Player Award, a six-time AL
batting champion, and a two-time Triple Crown
winner.

Ted Williams finished his playing career with a .344
batting average, 521 home runs, and a .482 on-base
percentage, the highest of all time. His career batting
average is the highest of any MLB player whose career
was played primarily in the live-ball era, and ranks tied
for 7th all-time (with Billy Hamilton). Williams retired
from playing in 1960 and was inducted into the Baseball
Hall of Fame in 1966. He died of cardiac arrest at the age
of 83 on July 5, 2002.

The U.S. Military Academy officially opened at West Point, NY. on
this day in 1802.

Lou Gehrig retired from major league baseball on this day in 1939.

On this day in 1987, U.S, President Ronald Reagan challenged Soviet
Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. It was 29
months later when Gorbachev allowed Berliners to destroy the wall.

On September 12,1990, now-former President Reagan returned
to Berlin with wife Nancy, where he personally took a few
symbolic hammer swings at a remnant of the Berlin Wall.

On this day in 1963, Civil rights leader Medgar Evers was fatally
shot in front of his home in Jackson, MS.

Byron De La Beckwith was accused of killing civil rights activist
Medgar Evers in 1963. After two trials had hung juries in 1964,
he was finally convicted of the crime in 1994. He received a life
sentence in prison where he died on January 21, 2001 at the age
of 80.

On 12 June 1978, Berkowitz was sentenced to 25 years to life in
prison for each murder, to be served consecutively. The Serial
killer had terrorized the streets of New York City for over a year.
killing six people and leaving seven others severely injured. He
was being called the .44 Caliber Killer at the time.
 

David Richard Berkowitz turned 65 on June 1.

In 1987, Berkowitz claimed to have become an evangelical Christian while
in prison. According to his personal testimony, his moment of conversion
occurred after reading Psalm 34:6 from a Bible given to him by a fellow
inmate. He says he is no longer to be referred to as the "Son of Sam"
but the "Son of Hope".  

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated in Cooperstown, New York on this day in 1939.

Islam’s prophet Muhammad died on this day in 632 AD.

On this day in 1968, James Earl Ray, an escaped U.S. convict, was
arrested in London, England, and charged with the assassination
of African American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. on
April 4, 1968. in Memphis, Tennessee.

On this day in 1967, Israeli airplanes attacked the USS Liberty in the Mediterranean during the 6-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. 34 U.S. Navy crewmen were killed. Israel later called the incident a tragic mistake in identifying the ship. The U.S. has never publicly investigated the incident.

(June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959)

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer
and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures, 532 of which
were completed. Wright believed in designing structures that were in
harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called
organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years
and was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as
"the greatest American architect of all time".
