fighting at Gettysburg began. It was the bloodiest battle.

On this day in 1946, the United States exploded a 20-kiloton atomic
bomb near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

During the Spanish-American War on this day in 1898, Theodore Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders" waged a victorious assault on
San Juan Hill in Cuba.

Diana, Princess of Wales (Diana Frances Spencer)  
(July1, 1961 – August 31, 1997)  

Diana married Charles, the Prince of Wales and the heir to
the throne of 16 Commonwealth realms. She became an
international icon for her beauty and her work with charities.

Her death, which was reportedly caused by her driver’s
drunkenness, sparked widespread media attention and
conspiracy theories.

The sovereignty over Hong Kong was transferred from Great Britain
to China on this day in 1997. Britain had controlled Hong Kong as a colony for 156 years.

Actor Marlon Brando Jr. (April 3, 1924 – July 1, 2004)

Brando’s Academy Award-winning performances include Terry
Malloy in On the Waterfront (1954) and Don Vito Corleone in 
The Godfather (1972). Brando was an activist for many causes,
notably the civil rights movement and various Native American
groups.

Marlon Brando was ranked by the American Film Institute as the
fourth-greatest movie star among male movie stars whose screen
debuts occurred in or before 1950. He was one of six professional
actors, along with Charlie Chaplin, Ronald Reagan, Lucille Ball,
Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe, named in 1999 by Time
magazine as one of its 100 Most Important People of the Century.
Brando died of respiratory failure on July 1, 2004, at age 80.

Workers at a Chevrolet plant in Flint, Michigan, assemble the
first Corvette, a two-seater sports car that would become an
American icon. The first completed production car rolled off
the assembly line two days later (below), one of just 300
Corvettes made that year.

On this day in 2000, six-year-old Elián González returned to Cuba
from the U.S. with his father. The child had been the center of an international custody dispute.

Federal agents seized Elián González, held in a closet by Donato Dalrymple, in Miami in April 2000. Dalrymple rescued the boy
from the ocean after his mother drowned when they tried to
escape Cuba.

On this day in 1997, boxer Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting
part of Evander Holyfield’s ear after three rounds of their WBA heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas, NV.

Richard Charles Rodgers (June 28, 1902 – December 30, 1979)

Richard Rodgers was an American composer, with over 900 songs and
43 Broadway musicals, leaving a legacy as one of the most significant
composers of 20th century American music. He is best known for his
songwriting partnerships with the lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar
Hammerstein II. His compositions have had a significant impact on
popular music.

Mel Brooks (Melvin Kaminsky) is 92 years old today.

Mel Brooks was the director of the classic satirical comedies Blazing
Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Spaceballs (1987), High
Anxiety (1977), The Producers (1967) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights
(1993). Brooks belongs to an exclusive club of entertainers as the
recipient of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

TIM MAGUIRE

North Korea invaded South Korea initiating the Korean War on this
day in 1950.

On this day in 1876, Lt. Col. Custer and the 210 men of U.S. 7th
Cavalry were killed by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at Little Big
Horn in Montana. The event is known as "Custer’s Last Stand."

is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the novel

Jacques-Yves Cousteau (June 11, 1910 – June 25, 1997) 

Jacques Cousteau was a French naval officer, explorer,
conservationist, filmmaker, scientist, photographer,
author and researcher who studied the sea and all
forms of life in water. He co-developed the Aqua-lung,
pioneered marine conservation. Jacques-Yves Cousteau
died of a heart attack on 25 June 1997 in Paris, two weeks
after his 87th birthday.
