More than 6,000 people were killed when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the city of Kobe, Japan on this day in 1995. It was the most severe earthquake to affect that region this century. The economic loss as a result of this earthquake is estimated to reach $200 billion.
Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 – April 17, 1790)
Franklin was a major figure in the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions.
Benjamin Franklin wrote under the pseudonym Mrs. Silence Dogood, and published provocative letters. He was the first United States Ambassador to France, where he advocated religious tolerance.
The U.S. presidential election of 1968 was the 46th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 5, 1968. The Republican nominee, former Vice President Richard Nixon, defeated the Democratic nominee, incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
After more than a year out of the ring, on this day in 1994, George Foreman took on the new champ, Michael Moorer, and knocked him out in the 10th round. With the victory, at the age of 45, he became the oldest fighter ever to win the heavyweight crown as well as the boxer with the most time between one world championship and the next. Foreman ultimately retired in 1997 after compiling an amazing 76-5 career record.
On this day in 1938, Orson Welles’ "The War of the Worlds" aired on CBS radio. The belief that the realistic radio dramatization was a live news event about a Martian invasion caused panic among listeners.
Welles takes questions from reporters at a press conference the day after the broadcast, on October 31, 1938. He told them that no one connected with the broadcast had any idea it would cause panic.

Gloria once worked with the Miami International Airport Customs Department while in college and was approached by the CIA because of her prowess with language. She has won seven Grammy Awards, including one for Best Tropical Latin Album in 1993 for Mi Tierra.
