The Battle of Antietam took place during the American Civil War on this day in
1862. More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing. The Rebel
advance was ended with heavy losses to both armies.

Hiram King "Hank" Williams (September 17, 1923 – January 1, 1953)

Regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers
and songwriters of the 20th century. Williams recorded 35 singles, five
released posthumously, that reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Country
& Western Best Sellers chart, including 11 that ranked number one, three posthumously.

showcased  as a television film, titled "Goodbye, Farewell

B.B. King (Riley B. King) (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015)

Legendary blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter B.B. King won a Grammy
Hall of Fame Award for his 1969 song "The Thrill is Gone." He grew up with
his grandmother because his mother was too poor to take care of him. His 
mother’s cousin gave him his first guitar.

Nobody Loves Me Like You was written by the great Sam Cooke. It peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to #23 on R&B/Hip-
Hop chart.

In New York on this day in 1971, National Guardsmen stormed the
Attica Correctional Facility and put an end to the four-day revolt. A
total of 43 people were killed in the final assault. A committee was organized to investigate the riot on September 30, 1971.

George Corley Wallace Jr.
(August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998)

Wallace was the 45th Governor of Alabama, having served two
nonconsecutive terms and two consecutive terms. He survived
an assassination attempt in in 1972, but remained wheelchair-
bound until his death from a bacterial infection..

During his final years, Wallace publicly recanted his segregationist
views and asked for forgiveness from African Americans.

The Roger Miller Show is a music variety television show hosted by
Roger Miller. The NBC program aired on Monday nights from 8:30–9
p.m. ET from September 12– December 26, 1966. The house band was
the Eddie Karam Orchestra.

Roger Dean Miller, Sr. (January 2, 1936 – October 25, 1992)

Miller was a lifelong cigarette smoker.  He died of lung and throat cancer
in 1992, at age 56, shortly after the discovery of a malignant tumor under
his vocal cords. His remains were cremated.
