been reached to end the Vietnam War.

On this day in 1968, North Korea seized the U.S. Navy ship Pueblo, charging it had intruded into the nation’s territorial waters on a
spying mission. The crew was released 11 months later.

Keeshan played the original Clarabell the Clown 
on the Howdy Doody show on NBC-TV.

Bob Keeshan created and played the title role in the children’s television
program Captain Kangaroo, which ran from 1955 to 1984 on CBS, the
longest-running nationally broadcast children’s television program of
its day.

John William Carson (October 23, 1925 – January 23, 2005)

Talk show host and comedian, Johnny Carson is best remembered for his
30 years as host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962–1992). 

He received six Emmy Awards, the Television Academy‘s 1980 Governor’s
Award, and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television
Academy Hall of Fame in 1987. Carson was awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom in 1992 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in
1993.

Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sighted Watling Island in the Bahamas
on this day in 1492. He believed that he had found Asia while attempting to
find a Western ocean route to India. The same day he claimed the land for
Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain.

On this day in 2000

Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev reportedly pounded a shoe on
his desk in protest against a speech critical of Soviet policy at a
U.N. General Assembly on this day in 1960.

On this day in 2002, three bombings shatter the peace in the town of
Kuta on the Indonesian island of Bali. The blasts, the work of militant Islamist terrorists, left 202 people dead and more than 200 others
injured, many with severe burns.

Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 – September 6, 2007) 

Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti was best known for his performances with
Spanish singers Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Together, they were given
the name The Three Tenors. He debuted as an opera singer in La bohème as
Rodolfo in 1961. Pavarotti was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in
2001. He fought a long, tough battle against pancreatic cancer which eventually
took his life at age 71.

Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.
(December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997)

The anchor of the USS Monitor, from the American Civil War, was retrieved by divers on this day in 1983.

The USS Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by
the Union Navy in February of 1862. It was lost at sea, December
31, 1862. The wreck was located August 27, 1973.

CAMILLE BOHANNON

The Pentagon reported the first of two North Vietnamese attacks on
U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin on this day in 1964.

Iraq invaded the oil-rich country of Kuwait on this day in 1990. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had driven down oil prices by exceeding
production quotas set by OPEC.

On this day in 1943, the U.S. Navy patrol torpedo boat, PT-109, sank
after being attacked by a Japanese destroyer. The boat was under
the command of Lt. John F. Kennedy (pictured above).

Warren Gamaliel Harding (November 2, 1865 – August 2, 1923)

Harding was the 29th President of the United States and was well liked
and admired. His death from a heart attack came as a great shock to the
nation.

"Wild Bill" Hickok was assassinated by Jack McCall in Saloon #10
in Deadwood, Dakota Territory.

on this day in 1863. It was a major victory for the North as  the Confederate troops retreated.
