ended on this day in 1836. The Mexican army of three thousand
men defeated the 189 Texas volunteers.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision on this day in 1857, 
ruled that blacks could not sue in federal court to be citizens.

Edward Leo Peter McMahon Jr. (March 6, 1923 – June 23, 2009)

Ed McMahon (left) and Johnny Carson (right) began their long association in
their first TV series, the ABC game show Who Do You Trust?, running from
1957 to 1962. Then afterwards, McMahon would make his famous thirty-year
mark as Carson’s sidekick, announcer and second banana on NBC‘s highly successfully The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson from 1962 to 1992.

The 22-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh was kidnapped
on this day in 1932. The child was found dead in May.

Bruno Richard Hauptmann was convicted and executed
for the kidnapping and murder of baby Lindbergh.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was captured by CIA and Pakistani
agents near Islamabad on this day in 2003. He was the suspected
mastermind behind the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 (below).

On this day in 1981, Bobby Sands (above) who was a member
of the Provisional Irish Republican Army began a hunger strike
while imprisoned at HM Prison Maze after being sentenced for
firearms possession. He eventually died May 5, 1981 at age 27.

The Peace Corps was established on this day in 1961 by President Kennedy (pictured signing the act).

Ronald William Howard is 64 years old today.

Director, producer, and actor Ron Howard first became known as Andy
Griffith‘s son Opie on The Andy Griffith Show on CBS from 1960-1968 
and also played teenager Richie Cunningham on Happy Days on ABC
from 1974-1984. His 2001 film A Beautiful Mind received the Academy
Award for Best Picture and earned Howard the Academy Award for
Best Director. He also directed the 1995 film Apollo 13.

Drew Blythe Barrymore was born in Culver City, California.

Drew Barrymore gained fame as a child actress in Steven Spielberg‘s
film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). She won a Screen Actors Guild
Award in 2010 for her portrayal of Little Edie in Grey Gardens. Drew
made her directorial debut with the 2009 film Whip It!

The Washington Monument was officially dedicated in Washington,
DC. on this day in 1885. It opened to the public in 1889.

inches.

John Glenn made space history on this day in 1962 when he orbited
the world three times in 4 hours, 55 minutes. He became the first American to orbit the Earth. He was aboard the Friendship 7
Mercury capsule. Glenn witnessed the Devil’s Cigarette Lighter
while in flight.

In West Warwick, RI on this day in 2003, 100 people were killed
and more than 230 were injured when fire destroyed the nightclub,
The Station. The fire started with sparks from a pyrotechnic display
being used by Jack Russel’s Great White. Ty Longley, guitarist for 
the band, was one of the victims in the fire.

American Tara Lipinski, at age 15, became the youngest gold
medalist in winter Olympics history when she won the ladies’
figure skating title at Nagano, Japan on this day in 1998.
 

Tara Kristen Lipinski will be 36 on June 10.

Actor Sidney Poitier is 91 years old today.
