IT’S BIRTHDAY 71 FOR JOEY DEE TODAY
Joey Dee formed the popular music group, Joey Dee and The Starliters.They are
best known for their successful million-selling 1961 recording "Peppermint Twist”.
RECORDED ON THIS DATE IN 1940
The Ink Spots helped define the musical genre that led to rhythm and blues,
rock and roll, and doo-wop. The groups release of “Maybe” by Decca records
reached #2 on the chart that year. The Ink Spots version of the song was also
used as the ending theme for the first game of the Fallout franchise.
FATAL PROTEST ON THIS DATE IN 1963
Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc, from Vietnam, burned himself to
death (below) at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to protest
against the persecution of Buddhists by the government of South
Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem.
#1 RECORD ON THIS DATE IN 1972
“The Candy Man" spent three weeks at the number one spot on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart and two weeks atop the adult contemporary
chart. The song featured vocals by the Mike Curb Congregation. It
soon became Sammy’s signature song.
