GOTHIC SOAP DEBUTED ON THIS DATE IN 1966
Dark Shadows was a gothic soap that originally aired weekdays on the ABC
television network, from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971. It was unprecedented
in daytime television when ghosts were introduced about six months after it
began.The series became hugely popular when vampire Barnabas Collins,
played by Jonathan Frid (above) appeared a year into its run. Dark Shadows
also featured werewolves, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks,
time travel, and a parallel universe. Now regarded as somewhat of a camp
classic, it continues to enjoy an intense cult following.
BETTY ROBERTS (FEB. 5, 1923–June 25, 2011)
Betty Cantrell Roberts was a Oregon politician and judge. She was
the 83rd Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, the highest
state court in Oregon. She was the first woman on the Oregon Supreme
Court, and had also been the first woman on the Oregon Court of Appeals.
Roberts served from 1982 to 1986 on the high court and from 1977 to 1982
on the Court of Appeals. From 1958 to 1967, Roberts taught high school in
the Portland metropolitan area at Reynolds High School, Centennial High
School, and David Douglas High School before becoming a business law
and political science teacher at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham
from 1967 to 1976.
Betty was a private mediator and senior judge until her death this past
Saturday due to pulmonary fibrosis. She was 88 years-old. Betty Roberts
was a great teacher and will be missed!
TAPING OF TV SPECIAL BEGAN ON THIS DATE IN 1968
Elvis, starring Elvis Presley, was the title of a 1968 TV special sponsored by The
Singer Sewing Machine Company , it aired on December 3, 1968 on the NBC
television network. The special is commonly referred to as the ‘68 Comeback
Special, because of subsequent developments in Presley’s career. At 6.00pm
Thursday, June 27, Elvis Presley took to the stage for the first time in over seven
years, resulting in four one-hour live shows being taped at NBC’s Burbank studios.
A black-clad Presley sat down and jammed with band mates for two shows, each
show having a different audience. There was a one hour break between them
(enough time for Presley to shower and have his outfit dry cleaned after
performing under the hot studio lights. In the second two hour segment,
recorded at 8.00pm,June 29, he remained standing and sang live to a mix
of live and pre-recorded backing, again in front of two different audiences.These
four sessions are often referred to collectively as “The Burbank Sessions.” The
soundtrack album was released simply as NBC-TV Special.

“WHERE THE ACTION IS” DEBUTED ON THIS DATE 1965
Where the Action Is or (WTAI) was a music-based television variety show
on ABC that aired weekday afternoons in black and white from Tuesday,
June 27, 1965 to March 31, 1967. It was created by Dick Clark as a spin-
off of American Bandstand. The program had its own group of performers,
most notably Paul Revere & the Raiders, who served as the house band
until 1966. The show’s theme song, “Action”, became a hit single for
Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon.
