National Grandparents Day is a secular holiday celebrated in the US and the

United Kingdom since 1978 and officially recognized in a number of countries 
on various days of the year, either as one holiday or sometimes as a separate
Grandmothers’ Day and Grandfathers’ Day, for the first time Grandma’s Day
was celebrated in Poland in 1965.

Colonel Harland David Sanders
(September 9, 1890 – December 16, 1980
)

Sanders was a businessman and entrepreneur, best known for
building his Kentucky Fried Chicken café into a fast-food empire.

He worked as a farmer, salesman, steamboat pilot, and railroad
fireman. He sold KFC to John Y. Brown Jr., Jack Massey, and a
group of investors for $2 million in 1964.

Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show
"Toast of the Town” on this day in 1956. He was shot from just
the waist up during the performance. Elvis would make a total
of three appearances on the CBS-TV show.

Otis Ray Redding Jr.
(September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967)

Singer/songwriter Otis Redding was born on this day in 1941. His hit "(Sitting on)
The Dock of the Bay" was recorded three days before he was killed in a plane
crash in 1967.

He sang for the Macon radio station WIBB every Sunday for six dollars. He had
his own band called Otis and the Shooters. Otis Redding is considered the King
of Soul and influenced many groups, such as The Beatles, The Doors, and Led
Zeppelin.

Patsy Cline (Virginia Patterson Hensley)
(September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963)

Country singer Patsy Cline recorded "I Fall To Pieces" in 1961, as well as hits
like "Walkin’ After Midnight." She was the first female solo artist to become part
of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her mother introduced her to music and they
sang together at church. Cline had perfect pitch but could never read music. She
died at the age of 30 in a multiple-fatality crash of the private plane of her manager,
Randy Hughes.
