Harry S. Truman defeated Thomas E. Dewey for the U.S. presidency on this
day in 1948. The Chicago Tribune published an early edition that had the
headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN (above)." The Truman victory had 
surprised many polls and newspapers.

Howard Hughes flew his "Spruce Goose," a huge wooden airplane, for eight minutes in
California on this day in 1947. It was the plane’s first and only
flight. The "Spruce Goose," nicknamed because of the white-gray color of
the spruce used to build it, never went into production.

The H-4 today is in McMinnville, Oregon, at the

The Charge of the Light Brigade took place during the Crimean War on this
day in 1854. The British were winning the Battle of Balaclava when Lord
James Cardigan received an order to attack the Russians. He took his troops
into a valley and suffered 40 percent caualties. Later it was revealed that the
order was the result of confusion and was not given intentionally.

Professional Golfer Payne Stewart was the U.S.Open champion in
1991 and 1999. His chartered jet lost pressurization shortly after
takeoff, then crashed several hours later. He was 42.

The Cuban Missile Crisis began on October 14, 1962, bringing the United
States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear conflict. Photographs
taken by a high-altitude U-2 spy plane (above) offered incontrovertible
evidence that Soviet-made medium-range missiles in Cuba—capable of
carrying nuclear warheads—were now stationed 90 miles off the
American coastline.
