CARLATA BRADLEY

On this day in 1962, U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson presented photographic evidence to the United Nations Security Council. The photos were of Soviet missile bases in Cuba.

The Charge of the Light Brigade took place during the Crimean War
on this day in 1854. The British were winning the Battle of Balaclava when Lord James Cardigan received an order to attack the Russians
and took his troops into a valley where they suffered 40 percent casualties. It was later revealed that the order was the result of
confusion and was not given intentionally.

On this day in 1983, U.S. troops and soldiers from six Caribbean
nations invaded Grenada to restore order and provide protection
to U.S. citizens after a recent coup within Grenada’s Communist
(pro-Cuban) government.

William Payne Stewart (January 30, 1957 – October 25, 1999)

It was on this day in 1999.

Stewart, 42, was one of the world’s most recognizable golfers because of his trademark knickerbockers. The plane carrying Stewart and five others crashed 
near Aberdeen, South Dakota, after traveling 1,500 miles, most of it while the
pilot, co-pilot and passengers were apparently unconscious or dead when the
plane lost cabin pressure during its flight and ran out of fuel and crashed. The
sounds of a low-pressure alarm could be heard on the recovered cockpit voice recorder.

On this day in 1973, OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting
Countries began an oil-embargo against several countries including
the U.S. and Great Britain. The incident stemmed from Western
support of Israel when Egypt and Syria attacked the nation on
October 6, 1973. The embargo lasted until March of 1974.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale hit the San
Francisco Bay area in California. The quake caused about 67
deaths, 3,000 injuries, and damages up to $7 billion.

On this day in 1777, American troops defeated British forces in
Saratoga, New York. It was the turning point in the American Revolutionary War.

On this day in 1947, over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California,
pilot Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 rocket plane and became the
first person to break the sound barrier.

95 in February.

The Battle of Hastings occurred in England on this day in 1066. The Norman forces of William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II of England.

Battle Abbey is a partially ruined Benedictine abbey in Battle, East Sussex, England. The abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings and dedicated to St Martin of Tours.

On this day in 1977, singer Bing Crosby died of a heart attack.

singer and actor Bing Crosby was the first multimedia star, Crosby
was a leader in record sales, radio ratings, and motion picture
grosses from 1931 to 1954. Crosby won an Academy Award for
Best Actor for his role as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion
picture Going My Way and was nominated for his reprise of the role
in The Bells of St. Mary’s opposite Ingrid Bergman the following year.

On this day in 1777, the Battle of Saratoga was won by American
soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

It was on this day in 1881. A picture from the Police Gazette,

aired on CBS on this day in 1970 and ran until 1977. The show
received high praise from critics during its run with 29 Primetime
Emmy Awards, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding 
Comedy Series three years in a row (1975–1977) and earned
Moore the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress 
in a Comedy Series three times (1973, 1974, 1976) and continues
to be honored long after the final episode aired. In 2013, the Writers 
Guild of America ranked The Mary Tyler Moore Show No. 6 in its
list of the 101 Best Written TV Series of All Time.
