In New York on this day in 1971, National Guardsmen stormed the
Attica Correctional Facility and put an end to the four-day revolt. A
total of 43 people were killed in the final assault. A committee was organized to investigate the riot on September 30, 1971.

George Corley Wallace Jr.
(August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998)

Wallace was the 45th Governor of Alabama, having served two
nonconsecutive terms and two consecutive terms. He survived
an assassination attempt in in 1972, but remained wheelchair-
bound until his death from a bacterial infection..

During his final years, Wallace publicly recanted his segregationist
views and asked for forgiveness from African Americans.

Meriwether Lewis explored and mapped the American Northwest with
his partner William Clark. He was appointed to be President Thomas
Jefferson
‘s aide in 1801 and provided him with information regarding
army politics. In addition to helping map the U.S., he served as the   
Governor of Louisiana.

during World War II while serving as a land-based patrol bomber pilot and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. He was the oldest brother of John F.
Kennedy. Joseph was the only Kennedy son who never sought political office.

Cecil B. DeMille was a filmmaker who made a total of 70 features, both
silent and sound films between 1913 and 1956. He is acknowledged as
a founding father of American cinema and the most successful producer-    
director in film history. His films were distinguished by their epic scale
and by his cinematic showmanship.

On this day in June of 1963, Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk Thích
Quang Duc burned himself to death at a busy intersection in Saigon. He
was attempting to show that to fight all forms of oppression on equal
terms, Buddhism too, needed to have its martyrs.

Photographer Malcolm Browne captured the scene in Saigon for the
Associated Press, and the stark image quickly became an iconic visual
of the turbulent 1960s.

Timothy James McVeigh  (April 23, 1968 – June 11, 2001)

Timothy McVeigh was convicted of blowing up the Oklahoma city federal
building killing and 168 people in the deadliest act of terrorism on American
soil.
