ED DONAHUE

On this day in 1519, Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan left
Spain to find a route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. Magellan
was killed during the trip, but one of his ships eventually made the journey.

Magellan was killed in the Philippines during the
Battle of Mactan by soldiers of  leader Lapu-Lap.

James Joseph "Jim" Croce
(January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973)

On this day in 1973, pop singer Jim Croce was killed along
with five others in a plane crash on his way to Sherman,
TX, for a concert. He was only 30 years old.

Croce released five studio albums and singles. His songs
"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle" reached
No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Croce’s chartered Beechcraft E18S crashed into a tree
during take-off from the Natchitoches Regional Airport
in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The Fugitive Slave Act was declared by the U.S. Congress on this
day in 1850. The act allowed slave owners to claim slaves that had escaped into other states.

September 18, 1975, after crisscrossing the country with her captors–
or conspirators–for more than a year, Patty Hearst, or “Tania,” as
she called herself, was captured in a San Francisco apartment and
arrested for armed robbery. Despite her later claim that she had
been brainwashed by the SLA, she was convicted on March 20, 1976,
and sentenced to seven years in prison. Her prison sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter and she was released in
February 1979. She later married her bodyguard. In 2001, she
received a full pardon from President Bill Clinton.

On this day in 2001, Letters postmarked in Trenton, N.J., and later
tested positive for anthrax, were sent to the New York Post and
NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw.

CAMILLE BOHANNON

The Battle of Antietam took place during the American Civil War on
this day in 1862. More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or
missing. The Rebel advance was ended with heavy losses to both armies.

On this day in 1972, the series "M*A*S*H" premiered on CBS-TV.

The war comedy-drama television series M*A*S*H aired on CBS from 1972
to 1983. It was developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted from the 1970 feature
film M*A*S*H, which, in turn, was based on Richard Hooker‘s 1968 novel
MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The series was produced
with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS. It is one of the highest-
rated shows in American television history.

On this day in 1974, President Gerald Ford announced a conditional amnesty program for draft-evaders and deserters during the Vietnam War.

of the Lebanese Christian militiamen.

TIM MAGUIRE

George Wallace was the 45th Governor of Alabama,
a position he occupied for four terms.

George Corley Wallace Jr.
(August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998)

In his later years, Wallace suffered from deafness and
Parkinson’s disease. He died of septic shock from a
bacterial infection in Jackson Hospital in Montgomery
on September 13, 1998. He suffered from respiratory
problems in addition to complications from his gunshot
spinal injury.
