On this day in 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA
PATRIOT Act, an anti-terrorism law drawn up in response to the
9/11 attacks. Its intent, in Bush’s words, is to “enhance the
penalties that will fall on terrorists or anyone who helps them.”

The "Gunfight at the OK Corral" took place in Tombstone, AZ. The
fight was between Wyatt Earp, his two brothers and Doc Holiday
and the Ike Clanton Gang. It occurred around 3pm on the afternoon
of Wednesday 26 October 1881 and only lasted about 30 seconds.

The bodies of, from left to right, Tom McLaury (or McLowry), Frank McLaury (or McLowry) and Billy Clanton. These three members of the 'Clanton Gang' were shot by Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan and Doc Holiday during the 'Gunfight at OK Corral'  on 26th October 1881, Tombstone,  Arizona. Myersville rest stop. Law enforcement officers search the car
that John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo were in when
police arrested them at the rest stop along I-70.

The Beirut barracks bombing was a terrorist attack that occurred on 
this day in 1983, in
Beirut, Lebanon, during the Lebanese Civil War. It
involved two
truck bombs striking buildings housing Multinational
Force in Lebanon
(MNF) peacekeepers, specifically against United
States
and French service members, killing 241 U.S. and 58 French peacekeepers, 6 civilians and the 2 suicide attackers. A group
called
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombings

POSSESSION OF ALASKA ON THIS DAY IN 1867

On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska
after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less
than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412
square miles, about twice the size of
Texas, and was championed
by William Henry Seward, the secretary of state under the 17th
President of the United States

grosses from 1931 to 1954. Crosby won an Academy Award for

for his role as Father Chuck O’Malley in the 1944 motion
picture Going My Way and was nominated for his reprise of the role
in The Bells of St. Mary’s opposite Ingrid Bergman the following year.
