United States President Bill Clinton went on trial before the Senate
on this day in 1999. It was only the second time in
U.S. history that
an impeached president had gone to trial. Clinton was later
acquitted of perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

coast of Fort Lauderdale. He was
completely alone, floating in an
inner tube. He was rescued on this day in 1999.

The boat that Elian and his mother, and 10 other people had been traveling on to the United States from Cuba had been ripped apart
in the rough seas, and he was one of the only survivors.

Harry S. Truman defeated Thomas E. Dewey for the U.S. presidency on this
day in 1948. The Chicago Tribune published an early edition that had the
headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN (above)." The Truman victory had 
surprised many polls and newspapers.
