Slobodan Milošević (August 20, 1941 – March 11, 2006) 

The United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague issued a sweeping
new indictment on this day in 2001 of the former Yugoslav president,
Slobodan Milosevic, charging him with genocide in connection with the
war in Bosnia in 1992-95.

In its third and gravest indictment, the tribunal charged that Milosevic
”participated in a joint criminal enterprise, the purpose of which was
the forcible and permanent removal of the majority of non-Serbs from
large areas of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.”

The first edition of "Life" was published and hit the newsstands on
this day in 1936. It featured a cover photo of the Fort Peck Dam by
Margaret Burke-White. The 466,000 print run immediately sold out.

On this day in 1946, Hermann Goering, a Nazi war criminal and
founder of the Gestapo, poisoned himself just hours before his scheduled execution.

On this day in 1951, "I Love Lucy" premiered on CBS-TV. It ran
until May 6, 1957 with a total of 180 (including the ‘lost’ original
pilot and Christmas episode) half-hour episodes spanning 6 
seasons. “I Love Lucy” became the most watched show in
the United States in four of its six seasons, and was the first
to end its run at the top of the Nielsen ratings. In 2012, “I Love
Lucy” was voted the ‘Best TV Show of All Time’ in a survey
conducted by ABC News and People Magazine.

The first major battle of the U.S. Civil War began on this day in
1861. It was the Battle of Bull Run at Manassas Junction, VA. The Confederates won the battle.

The "Monkey Trial" ended in Dayton, TN. on this day in 1925. John
T. Scopes was convicted and fined $100 for violating the state law
on teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. The conviction was later
overturned on a legal technicality because the judge had set the
fine instead of the jury.

France, began during World War II.

one vote, of all charges in his impeachment trial.

(May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979)

Nicknamed "The Duke," John Wayne played a hero in action
films and westerns and received an Academy Award for Best
Actor for his starring role in True Grit in 1969. His voice, and
acting style made him a major box office draw for thirty years.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were married in the
Dominican Republic on this day in 1994. They were divorced
in January of 1996.

Hank Williams Jr. (Randall Hank Williams) is 69 today.  

Country superstar Hank Williams Jr. is known for the hit "All
My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight," which served
as the opening theme for Monday Night Football from 1989
to 2011. He’s the son of country legend Hank Williams. He
followed in the footsteps of his late father at a young age
and started singing when he was eight years old.

During the U.S. Civil War on this day in 1862, about 14,000 soldier’s 
of the Confederate army surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at
Fort Donelson, TN.

The operator of a crematory in Noble, GA, was arrested on this day in 2002, after dozens of corpses were found stacked in storage sheds
and scattered around in the surrounding woods.

John Demjanjuk (above) went on trial in Jerusalem on this day in
1987. He was accused of being "Ivan the Terrible", a guard at the Treblinka concentration camp. He was convicted, but the Israeli
Supreme Court overturned the ruling.

On this day in 1968, America’s first 911 emergency telephone
system was inaugurated in Haleyville, AL.

Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite (right) went to City Hall
and called U.S. Representative Tom Bevill at the local police station
for the first 911 call.  

On this day in 2005, The NHL announced the cancellation
of the 2004-2005 season due to a labor dispute. It was the
first time a major sports league in North America lost an
entire season to a labor dispute.
