Ukraine’s Viktor Yanukovych declares win in disputed vote on this
date in 2004. He was poisoned during the election campaign when
it was confirmed that he ingested hazardous amounts of TCDD
, the
most potent dioxin and a contaminant in Agent Orange.

He suffered disfigurement as a result of the poisoning, but he has
since made made a full physical recovery (below).

On this day in 1903, Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso made
his U.S. debut with the
Metropolitan Opera in New York City in "Rigoletto."  He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses
of Europe and America, appearing in a wide variety of roles from
the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to

"Bobby" Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968)

Robert Kennedy was a U.S. Senator from New York and Attorney General under
his brother John‘s administration who was assassinated in 1968 while he was
running for president. He spearheaded many of the civil rights initiatives that the
Kennedy Administration put forward.

Shortly before his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve as an apprentice
seaman and later graduated from Harvard College and the University of Virginia
School of Law.

 Walter "Walt" Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) 

American poet Walt Whitman is best known for his collections Leaves of Grass
and Drum-Taps. His 1865 poem "O Captain! My Captain!" was written on the
occasion of the death of Abraham Lincoln. He dropped out of school at the
age of eleven and, to support his family, worked as a law office assistant and
a newspaper apprentice.
