The first major battle of the U.S. Civil War began on this day in
1861. It was the Battle of Bull Run at Manassas Junction, VA. The Confederates won the battle.

The "Monkey Trial" ended in Dayton, TN. on this day in 1925. John
T. Scopes was convicted and fined $100 for violating the state law
on teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. The conviction was later
overturned on a legal technicality because the judge had set the
fine instead of the jury.

(History) – An ammunition ship explodes while being loaded in Port Chicago, California, killing 332 people on this day in 1944. The United States’ World
War II military campaign in the Pacific was in full swing at the time. Lack of
training and poor procedures led to the disaster.

Port Chicago, about 30 miles north of San Francisco, was developed into a munitions facility when the Naval Ammunition Depot at Mare Island, CA,
could not fully supply the war effort.

Full diplomatic relations were established between the United States
and Vietnam on this day in 1995. President Clinton (above) made the
announcement of the normalization.

The United States’ first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton, was killed by Vice President Aaron Burr in a duel on this day in 1804.

On this day in 1979, the abandoned United States space station
Skylab returned to Earth. It burned up in the atmosphere and
showered debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia.

Babe Ruth debuted in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox on
this day in 1914.

Laurence Kerr Olivier, Baron Olivier (May 22, 1907 – July 11, 1989)

Laurence Olivier was among actors who dominated the British stage of the
mid-20th century. For his work in films, Olivier received four Academy
Awards: an honorary award for Henry V (1947), a Best Actor award and
one as producer for Hamlet (1948), and a second honorary award in 1979
to recognize his lifetime of contribution to the art of film. He was nominated
for nine other acting Oscars and one each for production and direction. Late
in his career, he had considerable success in television roles.

Althea Gibson won the Wimbledon women’s singles tennis title on
this day in 1957. She was the first black athlete to win the event.

(November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998)

Roy Rogers was one of the most popular Western stars of his
era. Known as the "King of the Cowboys", he appeared in over
100 films and numerous radio and television episodes of The
Roy Rogers Show.

Rogers died of congestive heart failure on July 6, 1998. He had
been residing in Apple Valley, CA. Roy was buried at Sunset Hills 
Memorial Park in Apple Valley, as was his wife Dale Evans three 
years later.

On this   day in 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death
penalty could constitute "cruel and unusual punishment." The
ruling prompted states to revise their capital punishment laws.

Israel removed barricades, re-unifying Jerusalem on this day in 1967.

On this day in 1995, the shuttle Atlantis and the Russian space
station Mir docked, forming the largest man-made satellite ever
to orbit the Earth.

Rosemary Clooney (May 23, 1928 – June 29, 2002)

Singer and actress Rosemary Clooney came to prominence
in the early 1950s with the song "Come On-a My House",
which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-
a-Me", "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey
There" and "This Ole House".

A long-time smoker, Clooney was diagnosed with lung cancer
at the end of 2001. Around this time, she gave one of her last
concerts in Hawaii, backed by the Honolulu Symphony Pops;
her last song was "God Bless America". Her final show was
at Red Bank New Jersey’s Count Basie Theater in December
2001. Despite surgery, she died six months later on June 29,
2002, at her Beverly Hills home. Her nephew, actor George
Clooney, was a pallbearer at her funeral, which was attended
by numerous stars.

Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003)

Actress Katharine Hepburn was a leading lady in Hollywood for more than
60 years. She appeared in a range of genres, from comedy to literary drama,
and she received four Academy Awards—a record for any performer—for
Best Actress. In 1999, Hepburn was named by the American Film Institute
as the greatest female star of Classic Hollywood Cinema.

In 1997, Katharine Hepburn had become very weak, was speaking and eating
very little, and it was feared she would die. She showed signs of dementia in
her final years. In May 2003, an aggressive tumor was found in Hepburn’s
neck. The decision was made not to medically intervene, and she died from
a cardiac arrest on June 29, 2003, a month after her 96th birthday at the
Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut.
