Meet the Press is a weekly television news/interview program broadcast on
NBC. It is the longest-running program in television history, though the
current format bears little resemblance to the debut episode on November
6, 1947.  It originates from NBC’s Washington, D.C. bureau.  Meet the Press
began on radio on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1945.     

The first host was its creator, Martha Rountree (below) the program’s only
full time female moderator to date. She stepped down on November 1, 1953
and until Ned Brooks could take over.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (May 25, 1840 – November 6, 1893)  

Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, was a Russian composer of the romantic
period, some of whose works are among the most popular music
in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer
whose music made a lasting impression internationally.

Mike Nichols (Mikhail Igor Peschkowsky)
(November 6, 1931 – November 19, 2014)

Film and theatre director, producer, actor and comedian Mike Nichols was
noted for his ability to work across a range of genres and an aptitude for
getting the best out of actors regardless of their acting experience. He
began his career in the 1950s with the comedy improvisational troupe,
The Compass Players.

Vladimir Samoylovich Horowitz
(September 18, 1903 – November 5, 1989)

Ukrainian-born American classical pianist and composer,
Vladimir Horowitz was acclaimed for his virtuoso technique, 
and the excitement produced by his playing made him one 
of the greatest pianists of all time.

Loretta Jane Swit was born in Passaic, New Jersey

  
Loretta Swit played the role of head nurse Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan
on CBS-TV’s M*A*S*H (1972-1983). She won two Emmy Awards for her work.

Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage (90 total hostages) on this day in 1979. The
militants, mostly students, demanded that the U.S. send the
former shah back to Iran to stand trial. Many hostages were
later released, but 52 were held for the next 14 months.

Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by right-
wing Israeli Yigal Amir after attending a peace rally on this day
in 1995. He was 73.

Soviet forces enter Hungary on this day in 1956 in order to suppress
the uprising that had begun on October 23, 1956.
