The first domestic passenger jet flight took place in the U.S. on
this day in 1958 when 111 passengers flew from New York to
Miami on a National Airlines Boeing 707 leased from Pan
American World Airways. In 1959 the Lockheed L-188 Electra
was introduced into the fleet. It was the only turboprop aircraft
type ever operated by the airline.

Kirk Douglas (Issur Danielovitch) is 102 years old today.

Legendary movie actor Kirk Douglas starred in 20,000 Leagues Under the
Sea
 (1954), Paths of  Glory (1957), Gunfight at the O.K Corral (1957), and
Spartacus (1960). Kirk Douglas became a legend on the silver screen,
receiving the Academy Honorary Award in 1996. He was a successful
competitive wrestler while in college and served in the U.S. Navy.

On this day in 1941,the United States entered World War II when it
declared war against Japan. The act came one day after the attack
on Pearl Harbor. Britain and Canada also declared war on Japan.
