The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I into orbit around the Earth on
this day in 1957. Sputnik was the first manmade satellite to enter
space. Sputnik I fell out of orbit on January 4, 1958.

On this day in 1993, dozens of Somalis dragged an American soldier through
the streets of Mogadishu. A videotape showed Michael Durant being taken
prisoner by Somali militants.

Joseph Frank "Buster" Keaton (October 4, 1895 – February 1, 1966)

Buster Keaton was an American actor, comedian, film director, producer, screenwriter, and stunt performer who  was best known for his silent films,
in which his trademark was physical comedy with a consistently stoic,
deadpan expression, earning him the nickname "The Great Stone Face."

Sting (Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) is 66 years old today.

British born Sting is a multi-instrumentalist and singer for The Police, known
for such hits as "Don’t Stand So Close to Me" and "Message in a Bottle." He
also became a successful solo artist, releasing his first album The Dream of
the Blue Turtles in 1985, followed by ten more albums the next two decades.

An international military tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany,
found 22 top Nazi leaders guilty of war crimes on this day
in 1946.

The Berlin Airlift came to an end on this day in 1949. The airlift had taken
2.3 million tons of food into the western sector despite the Soviet blockade.

African-American James Meredith James Meredith succeeded in registering
at the University of Mississippi on this day in 1962. It was his fourth attempt
to register.

James Howard Meredith turned 84 in June.

Several thousand people gather in the Daley Center Plaza in downtown Chicago on Sept. 14, 2001, for a memorial service to honor those killed
in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Cities across the country held similar
events after President George W. Bush declared Sept. 14 a day of

After President William McKinley died of gunshot wounds inflicted
by an assassin, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, at age 42,
succeeded him on this day in 1901.

On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the "Star-Spangled
Banner," a poem originally known as "Defense of Fort McHenry,"
after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, MD,
during the War of 1812 (above). The song became the official U.S. national anthem on March 3, 1931.

Margaret Sanger was an American birth control activist, sex
educator, eugenicist, writer, and nurse. Sanger popularized
the term "birth control", opened the first birth control clinic in
the United States, and established organizations that evolved
into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

On this day in 2005, President George W. Bush took responsibility
for the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

In New York on this day in 1971, National Guardsmen stormed the
Attica Correctional Facility and put an end to the four-day revolt. A
total of 43 people were killed in the final assault. A committee was organized to investigate the riot on September 30, 1971.

George Corley Wallace Jr.
(August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998)

Wallace was the 45th Governor of Alabama, having served two
nonconsecutive terms and two consecutive terms. He survived
an assassination attempt in in 1972, but remained wheelchair-
bound until his death from a bacterial infection..

During his final years, Wallace publicly recanted his segregationist
views and asked for forgiveness from African Americans.
