Martin Luther King Jr. (born Michael King Jr.) 
(January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968)

African-American Civil Rights Movement leader and pastor 
Martin Luther King Jr.who is remembered best for his iconic
"I Have A Dream Speech," which he gave in front of the
Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington. He
received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

At age 25, Dr. King became the pastor at Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church in Alabama.

President Richard M. Nixon announced the suspension of all U.S. offensive action in North Vietnam on this day in 1973. He cited
progress in peace negotiations as the reason.

England’s Queen Elizabeth I (Elizabeth Tudor) was crowned in Westminster Abbey on this day in 1559.

On this day in 1943, the Pentagon was dedicated as the world’s largest office building just outside Washington, DC, in Arlington, VA. The structure covers 34 acres of land and has 17 miles of corridors.

The first National Football League Super Bowl was played on this
DAY IN 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City
Chiefs of the American Football League. The final score was 35-
10.

Today was the first program of its genre when it premiered on NBC-
TV with original host Dave Garroway (above).

George C. Wallace was sworn in as governor of Alabama on this day
in 1963.

On this day in 1784, the American Continental ratified a peace treaty
with England ending the Revolutionary War.

On this day in 1943, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt flew from Miami, FL, to French Morocco where he met with British Prime
Minister Winston Churchill to discuss World War II.  Roosevelt
became the first U.S. President to fly in an airplane while in office.

Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married on this day in
1954. The marriage only lasted nine months.

NBC-TV’s "Today" show premiered on this day in 1952 with host
Dave Garroway.

Today‘s dominance was virtually unchallenged by the other networks until the
late 1980s, when it was overtaken by ABC‘s Good Morning America.

Keith Max Jackson (October 18, 1928 – January 13, 2018)

Jackson is remembered for his career with ABC Sports (1966–2006)
and concise coverage of college football (1952–2006). He died today
in California.

Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr. (May 27, 1911 – January 13, 1978)

Japanese Chief Government Spokesman Koichi Kato issues an
official apology concerning World War ll sex slaves.

On this day in 1992, Japan apologized for forcing tens of thousands of Korean
women to serve as sex slaves or “comfort girls”, as they were called, for the 
Japanese soldiers during World War II. He said, "We cannot deny that the
former Japanese army played a role" in abducting and detaining the "comfort
girls," and "We would like to express our apologies and contrition".

L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia, the nation’s first elected black
governor, took the oath of office in Richmond on this day in 
1990.

Lawrence Douglas Wilder will turn 87 on January 17.

Emile Zola’s "J’accuse" was published in Paris on this day in 1898.

Stephen Collins Foster  (July 4, 1826 – January 13, 1864)

Foster is known as "the father of American music", was an American
songwriter known primarily for his parlor and minstrel music. Foster
wrote over 200 songs; among his best-known are "Oh! Susanna",
"Camptown Races", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Beautiful
Dreamer".
