The first radio broadcast of "The Romance of Helen Trent" was followed by 7,222 episodes, ending in 1960. The soap was one of the most beloved of all the old time radio shows. It outlived most of network radio!

The Apollo 11 astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean on this day in 1969.
United States President Richard Nixon was in the central Pacific recovery area to welcome the Apollo 11 astronauts aboard the USS Hornet, prime recovery ship for the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission, on July 24, 1969. The Apollo 11 astronauts are, from left, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. The crew was quarantined after splashdown to ensure they did not bring back any contamination from the moon.
The "Telstar" communications satellite (above) sent the first live television broadcast to Europe.
The first public images beamed from New York to the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall (above) on July 23 should have been of President John F Kennedy, but because of a delay in the United States viewers were first treated to footage of a baseball game which was being shown on US television. The satellite was used for several television demonstrations before going out of service on February 21 the following year.

(Fox News) – Before blasting off into space in 1969 with his first single at the top of the UK charts, “Space Oddity," the late David Bowie, who was then called by his birth name: David Jones, hitchhiked from band to band in pursuit of stardom.
Former The Konrads drummer and manager David Hadfield found the tape today, which includes Bowie’s lead vocals on the song, “I Never Dreamed", in an old bread basket sitting in his garage.
According to Hadfield, There is no other recording featuring David as lead in existence.”
