On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson (left) signed
into law the Social Security Act that established Medicare and
Medicaid. It went into effect the following year.

The Black Tom explosion on July 30, 1916, in Jersey City, New Jersey, was
an act of sabotage by German agents to destroy American-made munitions
that were to be supplied to the Allies in World War I. This incident, which
happened prior to American entry into the war, is also notable for causing
damage to the Statue of Liberty.

The USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on
this day in 1945. The ship had just delivered key components of the
Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Only 316 out
of 1,196 men aboard survived the attack.

Founder of Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, developed the assembly-
line process for mass production. One of his first cars was the Model T

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is 70 years old today.

Bodybuilder, actor, and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger served as the governor
of California from 2003 to 2011. His best known films include Conan the Barbarian
(1982) Predator (1987), The Terminator series (beginning in 1984), and Total Recall
(1990). He decided to pursue a career as a bodybuilder at age fourteen, despite demonstrating ability in football. He became the youngest person to win the Mr.
Universe contest when he was 20.

World War I officially began on this day in 1914 when Austria-
Hungary declared war on Serbia.

Federal troops forcibly dispersed the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans
who had gathered in Washington, DC. They were demanding money they
were not scheduled to receive until 1945.

A U.S. Army bomber crashed into the 79th floor of New York City’s Empire State Empire State Building on this day in 1945. The freak accident was caused by heavy fog.

Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Kennedy Onassis ( Bouvier) 
(July 28, 1929 – May 19, 1994)

Former First Lady of the United States and widow of President John
F. Kennedy, Jacqueline was seen as a symbol of American style,
elegance, and grace. The image of her in the aftermath of her
husband’s assassination in 1963 is one of the most iconic images
in American history.

November 22, 1963 – Not published in LIFE – President John Kennedy
and wife Jackie Kennedy at Love Field in Dallas, Texas… just hours
before his assassination.

The instrumental song "Sleep Walk" was written and recorded by brothers Santo &
Johnny Farina, with their uncle Mike Dee playing the drums. It was recorded at
Trinity Music in Manhattan, New York City. The single entered Billboard‘s Top
40 on August 17, 1959 and rose to the number 1 position for the last two weeks
in September and remained in the Top 40 until November 9. It also reached
number 4 on the R&B chart and was the last instrumental to hit number one in
the 1950s and earned Santo & Johnny a gold record.
